Updates: IGN, Fantastic Fest, Indiecade, and initial sales numbers

Hi all!

It’s been another busy couple of weeks, and we wanted to update the blog with some goings-on you may have missed!

First off, Steve went down to San Francisco the other week to talk with the fine folks at IGN. In fact, IGN’s Greg Miller dubbed it “Gone Home Week,” and new video content went up day after day. On Monday Steve was on Up at Noon, where he was the interview guest of the week. Then on Wednesday he and Greg did a developer walkthrough of the game, sharing some insights and secrets about Gone Home. Finally on Friday Steve was the guest on the Game Scoop Spoilercast, where any and every plot detail of the game was up for discussion. Thanks again to Greg and the rest of the crew at IGN for having us, and putting together so much awesome video content about Gone Home!

Secondly, if you’re in Los Angeles or Austin, TX in the coming weeks, you’ll have a chance to play Gone Home at a couple of festivals, and maybe run into the developers! We’re very excited to be part of the Fantastic Arcade at Fantastic Fest in Austin from Sept. 19-22, and to be Finalists at Indiecade in Los Angeles, to be held Oct. 3-6! We want to thank the festival organizers for including Gone Home in their programs. We can’t wait to be part of these awesome events! Hope you’ll get a chance to stop in if you’ll be in the area– the playable sections of both festivals are free and open to the public, so come on down!

Finally, those sales numbers we mentioned in the title. We’re happy to announce that between Steam and our own website Gone Home has sold more than 50,000 copies since launch. We’re now almost a month out since launching on August 15, and we hope people will find it encouraging to know that, along with the positive critical response we are continually grateful for and humbled by, we are also doing alright as far as sales numbers go!

Thanks again to everybody that has played the game, shared their thoughts, and just supported us in general. Look forward to more exciting news soon!

I’m sure the great reviews and coverage by big name sites like IGN have helped sales, but I hope the momentum continues via good ol’ word of mouth. I get into conversations about video games on a fairly regular basis, and for the past few weeks I talk about Gone Home to anyone who’s interested. I leave out the details, but essentially just explain the premise and then emphasize how much I was moved by the experience. Honestly, when I think about WHY I loved Gone Home, it makes it my GOTY. I’m sure many debates will be had about Bioshock Infinite vs The Last of Us vs GTA V and so on, but none of those games brought back memories from my past like Gone Home did. Bravo, folks at Fullbright!

Ooh, I will definitely listen to that Spoilercast episode one of these days.

I know 50,000 copies is nothing to sneeze at, but I expected a teeny bit more. Oh well, it’s only the first month. Those podcasts and future Steam sales will jump that number up a bunch. How many of those sales came from the GH site as compared to Steam? I would imagine Steam has the majority, based on the amount of content that people post on the GH Steam hub. I understand that most developers don’t reveal their sales expectations and I respect your decision if you don’t want to share that info, but has GH reached your expectations sales-wise so far? I suppose it’s more of a labor-of-love type of game where you get what you can. On that note, has GH reached what you initially wanted it to be? Was there anything you would have changed? Maybe that’s a question for a few years down the line when the next Fullbright game is out. Personally, as autumn sets in, GH seems like it’s going to be my most memorable game of the year. Thanks!

  34. Glad you’re getting great reviews, very deservedly – Gone Home is also one of the most memorable games I’ve played recently, actually – at all, and I’m still unraveling some of it’s mysteries but I love so much about it even after the first playthrough.

While initial sales are not in the millions already… ;) …I’m hopeful this will get more traction as time goes by – best-of-year lists, joining a Humble Bundle sale – there’s still a lot of extra promotion to get and look how well Dear Esther, which tried some similar experiments, did. Well it did have a lot more starter promotion, being the second version of a very popular mod, but I for one am gonna make sure to mention Gone Home wherever possible because I am in such an awe and it deserves to be experienced by many more people. :)

I just finished Gone Home about 3 minutes ago, and I would personally like to say thank you for the experience. It’s been a long time since a story in a video game has moved me to goosebumps, but sure enough, your game did it (your ending did it).

I feel like you guys have just welcomed the exploratory adventure game into the 21st century. Not only did it feel natural for me to walk around the house, but I actually felt as if I were the character, attempting to find out where her little sister has ran off to. It rivals some short stories I have read, and kept me enthralled for the entire duration. The experience was seamless and one could tell it was well thought out. I applaud you all. The era of good writing in gaming is upon us and I hope you guys help lead the way.

I look forward to your future projects.
